A Note on Healing in America

Justin LaPree was a Marine and a firefighter. He spent years serving, first in uniform, then in the fire service. He was good at it. He also nearly died because of what it cost him.The story he tells is one of slow deterioration: the things that happen to people who absorb too much trauma without enough support. The isolation. The numbness. The feeling that you have tried everything available to you and nothing has reached the thing underneath. Then an entheogenic experience changed everything. Not because the medicine was magic. But because, for the first time, something reached the place that needed reaching. He describes not wanting to die anymore. That's how he says it. Not wanting to die anymore. That sentence is worth sitting with. Why He Built The Illuminating Co.He built it because he knew he wasn't the only one. Because 19 million veterans are living in this country and a significant number of them are carrying what he was carrying. Because the system that was supposed to help them often does not. Because he had found something that worked and felt a responsibility to make it accessible. The Illuminating Co. is many things: a nonprofit, a sanctuary, a care team, a community. But at its foundation, it is a refusal to accept that the people who gave the most to this country should be left with the least support when they come home. What It Means to Heal in America, Right NowWe are at an unusual moment. Entheogenic medicine is in the middle of a renaissance. Peer-reviewed research on psilocybin, MDMA, and other compounds is producing findings that the mainstream medical establishment is beginning to take seriously. The FDA has designated several compounds as breakthrough therapies. States and municipalities are shifting their legal frameworks. A path is opening. But the path is not equally accessible to everyone. Private retreats can cost thousands of dollars. Research trials are limited in scope. People who need this work most — veterans, first responders, people who have been through the system and through everything else — are often the ones with the least resources to access it.This is part of why Illuminating Heroes is a fully funded program. We don't charge the veterans and first responders who come through it. The funding comes from Illuminating Souls memberships, from donors, from people who understand that healing shouldn't have a price tag for someone who served. On Legal and Safe AccessWe want to be transparent about this. We operate legally.

Every modality we use is offered within frameworks that protect participants and practitioners. This isn't a gray area we navigate around. It's something we built the organization on.This matters because the internet is full of information about plant medicine, and not all of it is responsible. There are contexts in which these medicines are administered without proper screening, without care teams, without preparation or integration support. The outcomes in those contexts can be destabilizing. The harm reduction literature is clear about this. What we offer is not a shortcut. It is a carefully constructed process that takes safety seriously at every step. We screen everyone who comes to us. We do comprehensive medical intake. We maintain a team of licensed therapists and experienced facilitators. We do not cut corners on any of this, because the people who come to us deserve better than corners. What We BelieveWe believe that the healing of veterans and first responders is a collective responsibility, not a personal problem to be solved in isolation. We believe that ancient wisdom and modern science are not in opposition — that the traditions that have used these medicines for centuries and the researchers who are studying them today are pointing at the same truth from different directions. We believe that healing is not a destination but a practice, that integration is ongoing, and that community is one of the most powerful medicines we have. And we believe that if you are someone who has tried everything else and not found what you were looking for, you haven't reached the end of what's possible. You may just not have found the right door yet. We'd like to be part of helping you find it.If you want to know more about our programs, start with Illuminating Heroes for veterans and first responders, or Illuminating Souls for civilians seeking deeper purpose and healing. If you have questions we haven't answered, our team is available to talk.
